Do I need to be referred?Self-referrals are welcome and do not require a formal referral from a doctor. I also accept referrals from other health professionals.

How long is an appointment? How often will they be?Unless otherwise specified, appointments are 50 minutes in length. The remaining 10 minutes of the hour are spent reviewing your file and writing session notes to document the appointment. Sometimes it's helpful to have longer sessions, which can be discussed as needed. Sessions usually occur weekly, depending on the nature and severity of your concerns. Weekly sessions assist in building a strong therapeutic bond (considered essential to effective therapy) as well as maintaining momentum toward your goals. Sessions may begin to be further apart as therapy progresses and you become more comfortable applying what you have learned in sessions.

How long does therapy last? The length of therapy is highly variable, influenced by many factors, including: your goals, the complexity, severity and chronicity of your issues, your relationship with your therapist, your social supports as well as personal characteristics. How much you are able to engage in sessions/treatment and how comfortable you are with the work also play a part, as does what else may be occurring in your life. Therapy can be short-term to help with a specific issue (4-8 sessions), or longer to deal with more entrenched issues or personal growth (12-20 sessions), such as in cases of moderate depression and anxiety. More chronic issues may require longer treatment to address pervasive patterns of feelings, thoughts or behaviour. We will collaborate around your progress and goals as treatment progresses.
